Chandigarh's Mental Health Facility: Families Fight for Their Rights (2026)

The ongoing debate surrounding Chandigarh's Group Home for individuals with mental illness has sparked a crucial conversation about the future of mental healthcare in the region. This article delves into the concerns raised by caregivers and families, shedding light on the potential implications for those in need of long-term support.

A Delayed Dream

For many families, the Group Home represented a glimmer of hope, a solution to the daunting question of who would care for their loved ones with mental illness after their passing. However, the project's delayed operationalization and the proposed diversion of its purpose have left caregivers feeling frustrated and uncertain.

"We thought we had found a solution, but now it feels like we're back to square one. The lack of clarity is disheartening," shared Satish Kumar, an aging parent whose son relies on long-term support.

Navigating Complexities

The caregivers' concerns extend beyond the delay. They question the absence of trained professionals, structured programs, and psychosocial support systems at the facility. Priti Kalia, a caregiver, emphasizes the importance of providing individuals with mental illness the right training and support to lead fulfilling lives.

"It's not just about having a place to stay; it's about creating an environment that fosters growth and independence. Without trained staff and meaningful activities, the Group Home risks becoming just another institution," she adds.

Admission Process and Discrimination

The admission process has also come under scrutiny. Single parent Indubala highlights the challenge of a residential assessment, which she believes is unsuitable for those who require community-based support rather than institutional care. Additionally, families from economically weaker sections claim discrimination, as eligible applicants were directed to the Senior Citizens Home instead of the Group Home.

"We want equal opportunities for our children. They deserve the same access to facilities and support as everyone else," says Sumitra Devi, whose son is currently on a trial stay at the Senior Citizens Home.

A National Model at Stake

Dr. BK (Simmi) Waraich, a psychiatrist and governing body member of the UTTHAAN Society for the Group Home, believes the facility has the potential to set a national standard. She emphasizes the need for trained psychiatric social workers, occupational therapy, and vocational programs to create a vibrant and supportive community.

"This home was envisioned as a beacon of hope, a place where parents could rest assured their children would be cared for. We must ensure it lives up to its promise and becomes a model for inclusive and effective mental healthcare," Dr. Waraich asserts.

Moving Forward

As caregivers consider legal action, the future of Chandigarh's Group Home hangs in the balance. The situation highlights the urgent need for a comprehensive and empathetic approach to mental healthcare, one that addresses not only the physical infrastructure but also the human resources and support systems required to create a truly transformative environment.

"It's time to prioritize the well-being of those with mental illness and their families. Let's hope this issue prompts a much-needed conversation and leads to positive change," concludes Dr. Waraich.
